BSNl is the integrated telecom service provider in the country serving in all licensed areas except Delhi and Mumbai. BSNl is providing services like fixed line, mobile services, broadband services, Internet services, leased line services, managed services and several others to the consumers of the country. BSNl is the market leader in broadband/internet services in India with more than 64 per cent market share.
The internet services are being provided by BSNl with the help of domestic bandwidth being provided by BSNl’s owned MPlS network and Internet bandwidth being hired from international bandwidth providers spread across the globe.
It has been reported that three major cables which are serving as the international gateway connectivity are affected because of the multiple fibre cuts. The Sea-Me-We-4, IMEWE and EIG cable systems are the ones affected. Because of this disruption, BSNl has lost around 21 per cent of its total international bandwidth. BSNl is pursuing with its international bandwidth partners to restore the connectivity expeditiously who in-turn is pursuing with their business partners involved in this restoration process. This sudden unexpected bandwidth reduction in the International bandwidth is suspected to cause some delay, in accessing various international sites and their responses, by BSNl customers. Action is being taken by BSNl to divert the domestic traffic judiciously ensuring that the request for Internet bandwidth is passed on the international gateway only if found necessary.
