Rob lynes, director, British Council, talks about the festival that every year introduces new concepts in contemporary dance

Three years ago, the British Council in India wanted to delve into the different art forms that were of interest to both India and UK. It was then they thought of contemporary dance and realised that it  was one area which can be a cultural bridge. Rob lynes, director, British Council India, says, “We decided to bring contemporary dance to India to engage with the Indian audience, practitioners of dance and students.”

The first season of Impulse was a huge success that encouraged the Council to continue the show. While last year, Akram Khan, an English dancer of Bangladeshi descent, entertained the audience, this year, Indians will get to experience contemporary dance forms through the likes of the Hofesh Shechter Company, Scottish Dance Theatre and the Avant Garde Dance.

Rob adds, “This year, the Hofesh Shechter Company has already performed in Hyderabad and it was very well accepted. We received an overwhelming response from the city that has little exposure to contemporary dance. We hope to generate the same amount of interest in Delhi, too.”
