Repeat offenders?

Priyanka Chopra and Ram Charan shared that their forthcoming film is not a copy of Zanjeer made in 1973. It is rather a reimagined and contemporary version. Divya Kaushik reports

The word remake would soon be replaced by the phrase ‘reimagined version’ — the term coined by Priyanka Chopra to describe her forthcoming film Zanjeer. The actress is emerging as an obvious choice of the directors planning a remake. After Don, Agneepath, now it is Apoorva lakhia’s Zanjeer. Priyanka is proud of the fact that she is getting to be a part of most of Big B’s classic hit. “He is my favourite actor and I feel fortunate that I am getting to be a part of the films that he is known for. But if you will notice, neither in Don nor in Zanjeer there is an attempt to copy him. He is an actor par excellence and nobody can create the same impact that his films did. Zanjeer is a contemporarised version of his film,” said Priyanka, while she was here to promote the film with the director and the male lead of the film, Ram Charan.

Considering that the film is releasing tomorrow, the cast is on the move round the clock to promote it. And may be that is why they were excused for making an appearance before the media almost three hours later than the scheduled time. The actors and the director smartly  skipped the reasons for the delay and cited the most obvious ones, “There was some miscommunication. Moreover, there was too much of traffic on our way.”

Ram Charan was the most questioned, from how did he manage to speak fluent Hindi  to what does he think of  South Indian actors making their debuts in Bollywood, the actor promptly replied to all the queries. He shared, “When I was offered the film one and a half years ago, I consulted my father, Chiranjeevi, who is a big fan of Amitabh Bachchan and has watched his every film. He was jealous that I have been offered this film. later when I heard the final script I thought that this is one film that I should be a part of. I never looked at the script as something adapted from a popular film, because if I would have done that it would have been very difficult for me to play my part,” he said and added, “Ranjhanaa’s success is keeping us in good spirits and I think it is a good phase when actors are freely moving between the industries. I have huge expectations from this film and have worked hard to better my Hindi.”

like loyal members of a mutual admiration club, the two actors went on praising each other. “I have been a huge fan of Priyanka’s work and I respect her as an actress. So far Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been the most popular down South but I can see that Priyanka is getting popular too,” said Ram Charan and Priyanaka interrupted, “I can also expect a temple in my name then, fans usually do that, rightIJ” Ram nodded in affirmation. Priyanka added, “Bollywood actors can still move out, but I was amazed to see that Ram Charan has such a loyal fan following in Hyderabad that a troupe of 300 people follows him wherever he goes,” she said. Along with Zanjeer, the Telugu version of the movie, titled Thoofan, is also made.
