With Highway, Imtiaz Ali has finally managed to bring out a story that stayed with him for 15 years
He thought Highway would be the first film he will direct, but destiny had other plans. He ended up making his directorial debut with Socha Na Tha with Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia. But the subject of a truck journey remained with him for over 15 years and finally Imtiaz Ali has made a film on it. “There was something about the story that didn’t die. Usually you lose interest in a story after a certain point but there was something so unique about this, something so influential, that it remained with. I thought it will be an action film or a romantic film but it has turned out to be different. It is about discovery of yourself while travelling. It’s a coming-of-age movie,” said Imtiaz and added that Alia was the first choice to play the role of the female protagonist, “as she can bring out a transformation from a cute, sweet girl to a mature one. She has an understanding of the character.”
