Comicstaan and Karenjit Kaur: The Untold Story Of Sunny leone are surprisingly doing well with their frankness
AMAZON BUCKS UP
A week is all it took Amazon Prime Original series, Comicstaan, to become the most watched show on its streaming platform. The US-based company is also launching an original, Mirzapur, along with Excel Media and Entertainment. While the latter is being touted as a heart-pounding action series, the former is a light show for the lovers of stand-up comedy.
Mirzapur will feature gangsters armed with sharp minds, dry humour and crafty moves. It will release later this year while Comicstaan is already available for streaming.
Comicstaan has been winning hearts with its interesting content and unique format. It is a first-of-its kind digital comedy reality series, which is a unique talent hunt for the next big stand-up comic. The series brings together top comedians under one roof. Tanmay Bhat, Kenny Sebastian, Biswa Kalyan Rath, Kanan Gill, Kaneez Sukra, Sapan Verma and Naveen Richard play the role of judges while Abish Matthew and Sumukhi Suresh host the show. It is a nine-episode series presenting a new theme like observational comedy, situational and improvisational, where the judges hunt for future comedy talent and voices. The recently released episodes have been tickling the funny bones of viewers, and they can’t wait to watch upcoming episodes of the show.
SUNNY SIDE UP
While Amazon has these new shows lined up, ZEE5, a video on demand website run by Zee Entertainment Enterprises limited, has been streaming the actress Sunny leone’s biopic Karenjit Kaur: The Untold Story Of Sunny leone. The show ran into controversy after Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) objected to the title as faith leaders feel that a person who doesn’t follow the teachings of Sikh gurus shouldn’t use the name Kaur as it could hurt Sikh sentiments.
Its director Aditya Datt responded to the objections over the title saying, “I completely respect the Sikh community... I am a Punjabi myself but it’s surprising that in today’s modern day and age there is an objection to using one’s own family name, which is one’s birthright and for whatIJ The series is based on truth and facts related to Sunny’s life, including her family and early life. How does one change the truthIJ And whyIJ”
The show, which stars Sunny herself, traces her struggle and her journey from a girl-next-door in Canada and the US to a Bollywood celebrity. It is soaring up the charts for its dose of realism.
