Eleventh National Voters’ day (NVD) was celebrated in East District. On January 25, 1950, the Election Commission of India was commissioned under the first Chief Election Commissioner Sukumar Sen. The first general election in India was conducted in the year 1951-52, including both men and women in the electoral list. Earlier, in European countries and America, the women had to earn the voting right with consistent battle against the social inequality.
The theme for this year’s National Voters’ day was Making Our Voters Empowered, Vigilant, Safe and Informed. It also focusses on ECI’s commitment towards conducting elections safely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The main purpose of the NVD celebration is to encourage, facilitate and maximise enrolment, especially for the new voters. Dedicated to the voters of the country, the day is utilised to spread awareness among voters and for promoting informed participation in the electoral process. The NVD celebration is followed by the extensive special summary revision every year to enroll young electors of the age group 18 to 19 years. New voters are felicitated and handed over their Elector Photo Identity Card (EPIC) in the NVD functions.
In East District, the cultural programme was organised in eight categories and winners were felicitated by District Magistrate on virtual mode.
