As a part of its endeavour to afford improved facilities to passengers especially at major railway terminals with high passenger traffic, Northern Railways has installed a set of escalators (up and down) on platform number 16 (towards second entry) at New Delhi station.

The senior most employee of Delhi main station, Sukbir Singh (shunting master) inaugurated the facility on June 13 in the presence of general manager of Northern Railways, Pradeep Kumar , chief administrative officer (construction), BD Garg, chief personnel officer, Anand Mathur and Anurag Sachan, divisional railway manager of Northern Railways.

Pradeep Kumar inspected the station premises including the entrances, waiting halls, booking centres and all passenger amenities like lighting, drinking water and catering. He also exhorted the staff to work consistently during this peak travel period. He directed that cleanliness and sanitation must be ensured. The newly installed escalators have a capacity of 9600 passengers per hour and can work in both directions to cater to passenger needs during rush hours. The escalators are driven by energy efficient VVVF drives. They have a standing capacity of 68 passengers per escalator and travel at a speed of 0.5 meter/second.
