MJ5, a participating group in India’s Dancing Superstar, are at present working hard to relive Michael Jackson in their own format. Members spoke to Iknoor Kaur

With each passing day, the benchmark at Star Plus’ India’s Dancing Superstar is getting higher. The contestants are pushing the envelope with each act. They are cashing in on their signature dance forms and also experimenting with acts to frame fresh challenges. While MJ5 introduced the Michael Jackson moves in their own unique way by adding Popping style, the D Maniax tried to make slow motion look natural. Other teams — loyola Dream Team, Shubronil Paul, Padmini, Debashish, Akshay Pal, Vikas Sawant, Suniti Chaiyyal and Amardeep Singh Natt — too are toiling day and night to prove their mettle.

We spoke to the members of MJ5 who visited Noida  to promote the show. Kartik and Shraey of ABCD fame managed to weave their own dance around the MJ theme with three other students. The team fuses Popping with moon-walk. “We wanted to give our dance a character so we chose Michael Jackson. Since everyone does MJ and it is very common, we added our own element of Popping,” explained Kartik.

Kartik shared, “Shraey and I had initially decided to do a solo MJ performance in the show, but then we had to add three more people to bring credibility to our performances. We created our group MJ5 on WhatsApp.”

Accompanying the duo were three other students, Rohit, Himanshu and Vishnu. MJ5 is hopeful as a team. In spite of the limit that Michael Jackson’s theme puts on their dance, they feel that their additions to the dance will make their act different. “We believe in presenting the best. We work hard and think creatively,” said Shraey.

Their attitude towards the show is inspiring. They said, “We don’t look at winning or losing. We just want to show the audience and the judges our best performance.”Host Ravi Dubey was also present. “All the teams on the show are so crazy and full of life that we end up having a ball,” he commented.

Elaborating more on his experiences as an anchor  he said, “This shift from acting to dancing and now anchoring has been good. Acting is rehearsed creativity while anchoring is spontaneous.”

The show is almost at the turning point now and will soon see another round of elimination. Dubey said that at this stage he wouldn’t want to see any one go out of the show because they all possess a lot of talent.
