Kavita Kaushik is back as a Haryanvi cop in FIR on SAB after a three-month break. She spoke to Iknoor Kaur about how she pioneered the ‘fancy cop funda’ in the industry
The days of Sridevi and Madhuri are gone and cinema has transformed a woman’s image. It’s only packed with glamour,” said Kavita Kaushik, who is famous for playing the character of crude, rash Haryanvi cop, Chandramukhi Chautala, in FIR. She is back on the show after a three-month break.
She left the show to be a part of Tota weds Maina. It was being said that Kavita was bored of being a part of FIR. “I wasn’t bored. As an actor we are greedy for more roles. I thought that a change would be good. I didn’t tell the channel that I wanted to leave or anything of that kind. They offered me another show and I agreed,” she clarified.
She wanted to devote her complete attention and time to her new show and therefore decided to part ways with FIR. “There’s a huge responsibility on the lead pair of the newly launched show. I didn’t want to take things easy. Moreover, it was difficult to do justice to both the shows simultaneously,” she said and added, “Audience was angry about the fact that I left. Nobody pressurised me to come back, but I am someone who loves my fans. I started from scratch and what I am today is because of my fans. Many called and told me that they stopped watching FIR and I was in demand. I didn’t want to disappoint them.”
The actress said she enjoyed the change and is now back with a bang. “The new stories are great. The producers of the show are spending good money,” she informed.
The 30-year-old actress has been a part of shows like Kutumb, Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, CID and Kumkum. She won nine awards for FIR. She feels Chandramukhi Chautala is the most difficult role she has done so far.
“I play an arrogant, rash woman. The kind of voice modulation that the character needs is tough for my vocal chords. I’m on constant medicines for my throat. I shoot all day in the heat and do action sequences because of which many-a-times I get hurt. People feel that it is cool to do these action scenes for a woman, but it’s exhausting,” she shared.
She continued, “Women don’t get to play such roles. Woh zamaana gaya (Those days are gone). Today women play glamorous roles. I don’t want to play a bahu like everyone else on television. I give my self full credit for starting the trend of superhit films like Dabangg and Singham. The films that present the cops in new avatar. I was the first one to take up the challenge.”
Popularly known by her character’s name, Chandramukhi, she plans to stay in the show for long. She said, “FIR is for life now. If my leaving the show is affecting the show, then I feel that as an actor it is my duty to stay where people want to see me. Every episode from now on is full of action, comedy and naach-gaana. Every story is being treated like a film.”
Kavita showed an excessive amount of discontent towards the silver screen. “Films don’t excite me. FIR has been consistent for my career and has given me all that I wanted. I can leave a show on television for another but never for a film. I am dedicated to the industry I am in,” she said.
However, quite contrary to that, she has done three films in the past like Ek Hasina Thi, Mumbai Cutting and Phillum City. She will also be doing an item number in Apoorva lakhia’s Zanjeer and is shooting for Anirudh Chautala’s Democracy Private limited.
