Preparation is key
Although laidback fashion trends including the boho look always come to play in the summer, it’s important not to let this attitude go to your head — quite literally! Remember that the sun can seriously damage your hair and it’s important to protect it correctly. I would recommend a serum or hair cream to smooth frizz, but it’s essential that you choose something with added heat protection. Always check the label if you’re not sure.
Embrace your inner beach babe
Make sure that hair is protected first, don’t be afraid to try a new look in line with the summer weather to suit your lifted mood. A salt spray might sound like a daunting idea for anyone who’s never tried this before, but it’s actually very simple to use and suits all hair types and an array of age groups. Simply spray this over the whole hair — don’t use too much on the ends if you have dry or curly hair — and scrunch with your fingers to get that sexy, tousled look. This is something that my celebrity clients are requesting more, and you can see why, since it’s perfect for casual days at home or even for something special like an awards ceremony or wedding.
Easy to do buns and plaits
Although hair, kept long and loose, can look gorgeous for the summer. If you’re caught with frizzy hair and don’t have time to sort it, embrace the up-do, which can look both elegant and playful for the warmer months. A top knot tied on top of the head is glamourous for a summer themed party, but will look sophisticated and practical enough for the office too. And I’m seeing many more women styling their hair in plaits now, which can be a great look for all face shapes. Frame a heart-shaped face with a French braid across the head or soften a round face with a traditional plait at the nape of the neck or a funky fishtail braid. We are seeing more plaits on the red carpet, and this can be perfect for many looks. Plus, your hair will be off your face and there’s no chance of it getting knotted or damp with humidity.
Ditch the straighteners
Before hair starts getting high maintenance and dramatic again in September, give your hair a break from damaging tools and embrace your natural waves. Don’t be afraid of hair’s natural volume and curl because the natural texture will give your look a modern and relaxed look, which is perfect for summer and requires little maintenance.
Say it with flowers
Flowers don’t have to be restricted just to festivals, so indulge your inner hippie and don’t be afraid to accessorise. Choose flowers which flatter your skin tone — I love an electric blue or a deep red against an Asian skin tone, while orange and tropical colours will suit someone with an olive skin tone. Paler women should go for softer colours, but go for any size of flower that you like. A simple string of daisies looks great set against a french braid, while larger flowers are fun and really suit the vibrancy of summer days. If your hair is thicker, then make sure to set the flowers with some kirby grips so the accessories don’t fall out, and don’t forget the hairspray, especially since it’s so warm and humid outside.
