The mind’s relaxation is vital in the treatment of many ailments as it raises immunity and will power, says Brahmakumar Nikunj

In the last two decades, especially with the advent of hi-tech and modern technology, India has witnessed many revolutionary changes and developments in the concept, approach and methodology of health sciences. The impact of these changes has been so much that man’s understanding of illness or disease, and also of health and wellness, has changed enormously.

With modern methods of diagnosis, old concepts have been totally discarded or become obsolete. Off late, there has been a lot of research being done in genetic engineering to find the causes of various diseases in genes and find ways to prevent or treat them. However, it is still quite strange that still hundreds and thousands of people are suffering from life threatening diseases.

Today with years of experience and proven tests, medical professionals all over the world have realised that stress and mental tension are the greatest killers of mankind and the root cause of almost all diseases. Despite the marvellous feats in this area, the number of patients are still increasing and no disease has completely been eradicated from the earth. The main reason for the increase in the number of patients is due to the fact that certain aspects such as their thinking habits, old memories, emotional traits and attitudes are not being given as much attention as is necessary.

The fault does not lie with doctors, but with the society at large, which must provide for training of man’s emotions. This is imperative because in reality, the disturbance caused at the emotional level is a major factor that leads to the contraction of many diseases. Similarly the habit of reviving memories of one’s traumatic past again and again, serves as a big setback to mental and physical health.

While studying about the effects of meditation on human health, researchers have found that the level of relaxation obtained by practicing meditation has a positive effect on the sub-conscious mind. Meditation also proves to be fruitful as it results in as it also raises his level of immunity, tolerance, self control and will power which are very useful in the treatment of ailments.

This relaxation response, according to researchers, comes from the area where the pituitary and hypothalamus combine. One gives out alpha and delta waves from this sub-cortical region when they engage their mind in positive thinking. Thus, the importance of positive thinking for good health and harmonious nature is well established and meditation is considered as the easiest tool to achieve it.

Proper understanding of sympathetic-parasympathetic nervous system and hypothalamus, thalamus and hypophysis should leave no doubt in our mind that, unless a man’s mind is cured and his will to become well is strengthened, no long lasting results can be assured through medicine or surgery. So make a strong resolve to strengthen ourselves mentally by applying principles of positive thinking and create an aura of wellness around us to cure self as well as people around us.
