“Kashmir is the safest place for women and no other state in this country is as safe as my Kashmir,” said, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. Speaking at the launch of Bharat International Tourism Bazaar, she added, “Girls can roam around anytime and anywhere. Safety is the biggest thing my state can offer. There is no fear of getting raped in a car.” With a sharp focus on tourism, the maiden event of BITB in the capital city focused on accelerating the tourism in the country and position India as the centre for global tourist market.

Mufti got emotional while speaking for Kashmir and said, “I remember my father whose singular vision was to make the state no. 1 in tourism. I believe tourism can help restore normalcy back in the valley.” She added that the state needs the support of the country to bridge the existing gap. “I don’t know if you need Kashmir or not but Kashmir needs all of you,” she concluded. Present at the event was lt. Governer, Najeeb Jung who also highlighted India's rich heritage and culture, stressing that, “if we are not able to attract tourists then there is seriously something wrong.” Considering the event as the platform which will enable not only tourism but also an exchange of cultures and values, he added, “BITB is an icon of tourism and will make the city a centre for global tourism.”

Inaugurating the event, Mahesh Sharma, Union Minister of State for Tourism and Culture, said, “We are committed about taking India’s tourism on the next level and BITB is an important step in that direction.” He added that the increase of tourism in the country will bring new streams of business and would also give a boast to the hospitality sector.

The tourism event soon turned into a slugfest when Delhi Tourism minister, Kapil Mishra asked some uncomfortable questions to the J&K Chief Minister. The minister said, “Terrorism and tourism cannot go hand in hand.” He asked Mufti to clarify her take on terrorists and terrorism in Kashmir and accused Kashmir citizens of giving shelter to terrorists. After creating a flutter at the event, Mishra left by saying that he cannot share the stage with the chief minister. The event also honoured few iconic Indians, who have impacted global travel and tourism.
