The newly-opened Junkyard cafe in the heart of Delhi has not only used junk material to add to the funky vibe but have utilised an extensive property, unlike any restaurant in CP. Riya Sharma checks in
Who doesn’t like to cheat with foodIJ The feeling of indulging in lip smacking snacks which unfortunately is high on calories can make anyone frighten. The problem with gratifying food is—you don’t know that what are you consuming with the potent question —what amount of calories did I consume during this course of mealIJ
For all those health conscious who willingly or unwillingly burn their extra calories while hitting gym would love the newly opened Junkyard Cafe in the heart of Delhi - Connaught Place. As you enter the cafe, it gives you a feeling that you have entered into an old but mind you, funky garage. A quick glance of the cafe is enough to notice that the property is spread into a huge space which is otherwise unlikely in many restaurants of CP. The place is painted with vibrant hues of yellow and orange with chairs having handles of gas pump, tyres hanging on the wall, beer bottles and wooden furniture — all to add the junk factor to the cafe.
“We at junkyard are making sure that indulgence in food menu is high on health meter, the offerings would be nutritious, healthy and at the same are priced very reasonably. It’s also for who enjoy keeping it casual and going out for a good satiating meal in funky environment,” said Umang Tewari, owner of the cafe.
In the midst of our having a look of the whole cafe, we were given the menu which seemed like a heavy notebook- only in terms of weight. The menu besides the multi-cuisine section has a divided section for the health conscious and then the other regular mains and starters menu. Every food item describes the proteins, carbohydrates, fats et al. it has. From this section, we ordered warm caramalised onion on wheat pita. The pita breads had onion and eggplant spread perfectly on the top which was light and rich in taste.
As we really don’t mind gorging on delicious food from the other section, we ordered cold mezze platter and and nachos overload with chicken from the starters menu. Though we had no idea what the mezze platter would be, we were surprised by what was presented to us. The platter had pita breads which were stuffed with cheese- right proportion of cheese to be precise which was not served with th regular hummus that we have. It was served with eight spreads- all having different and taste that matched perfectly to our taste-buds. Along with two kind of hummus, we enjoyed our breads with tahini wasabi, baba Ganoush( dip made of brinjal and other vegetables) ,olive, avocado and crudites.
loaded chicken nachos had chicken chunks with cheese spread on the top. Those who like to eat spicy would love it as it not only satiates the chilly factor but also gives a tangy flavour to it. For the main course, we ordered chicken mashawie with vermicelli rice and jamaican jerk chicken which actually sound really out of the box to us.
The chicken mashawie was grilled in butter and was so soft that it actually melted as we took the first bite. And the jamaican jerk was fried and tasted somewhat like the fried chicken that we get at any restaurants. What we liked about it was the crispy layer at the top and delicate chicken inside.
With this, we concluded our evening at the junkyard and to all the foodies out there, if you want a healthy meal or indulge in delicious delectables, you know your stop now.
