Jogging support

The Pink Treadmill campaign has arrived here. A fitness club and spa in Noida has taken up the concept which connects your gymming miles to a cancer charity. SM Verghis reports

Just a month ago Sunaina Chibba lost her dad to oral cancer.

Sunaina, who frequently involves herself with cancer charities, recalled how expensive treatment, (“take the purchasing a single morphine shot”), can get.

So she is gaga about the arrival of The Pink Treadmill, a charity campaign begun in the late 2000s overseas, which connects gyms to raising funds for cancer.

A certain company produces these treadmills, in an eye-catching, shocking pink.

Now a newly-opened gym in Noida owns four of them, (apparently so does another place in Jaipur we were told).

In Chibba’s words, the campaign works like this: “Each of the pink treadmills has a software, which is connected to a computer that records the miles covered by the members. The fitness centre will donate 10 cents, (equalling about Rs10), for each mile, per every mile logged on by a member. For example, if its 750 miles. The gym will donate Rs7500 every one or two months, to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. What members have to do, is deposit a gym fee, (about Rs2,000). Then then have to jog as if their lives depend on it.”

Well, someone else’s life will.

It’s a great incentive if you want to lose a ton of weight and not feel guilty about having eaten too much, because you’ll be sweating it off for another person’s benefit.

It sounds like a do-able cause.

Chibba previously did some work with Global Concern. She said, “I tied up with artists who freely gave us their canvases, and lots of page 3 people were involved. Everyone gave a lot of money, without asking for anything in return. The intention of Pink Treadmill is to raise awareness and make India fitter. Charity events sometimes get a bad name, but there is always good and bad, and its because of the good people that the world goes on.”
