Grown out of his suit

At the onset of season three of a popular show on Comedy Central, Patrick Adams says that he will be seen as a mature man now

How does wearing a suit get you into the character of Mike RossIJ

I think completely. I’ll tell you a funny story. When I was a kid growing up in Toronto there were a lot of private schools and my mom wanted to send me to private school and I just didn’t want to go. I wanted to be a theatre nerd and smoke pot all the time. She would always say, “I want you to wear suits to work every day — that’s what you are destined for.” I said, “I will never, ever wear a suit to work every day.” So, now she comes to set and sees me everyday in a suit, laughs and looks at me. She just laughs and laughs and thinks “I got you.” For the first few years I was still in that state of mind. It was so uncomfortable, I felt like I looked strange in suits. It was only last year that I realised, suits are incredible things that teach you how to stand properly (laughs). If you see the first two seasons you will notice I have a slouch and am not comfortable, but now I actually sit and get my suits designed myself.

Is the bromance between your character and Harvey (Gabriel Macht) over  yet or has it changedIJ

I don’t ever want to change what works for the show. This whole idea about the young guy who is trying to make his way and this older pro who’s showing him the ropes and also giving him a hard time works well with people. That being said, I think any show in order to survive and keep the interest of the audience intact, needs to grow and evolve. I think that my character needs to grow up with every season. So we’re always talking about how to keep elements of the of the young Mike, but at the same time grow him up. Mike can’t be a puppy every single year. This year he’s not a young guy anymore and he’s been here long enough to know how the world works. So the bromance I think is changing. The what-that-this conflict between the two of them — you see Mike trying to resolve the conflict in a more mature way. Where he might have begged like a little girl, he will be holding his ground and saying sorry, but also trying to explain himself.

So where does Mike stand in the battle that is brewing between Harvey and Jessica (Gina Torres)IJ

I think that it’s pretty clear in the first episode that he wants that choice to be Harvey. He’s going to fight that battle and the hard part is that that Harvey does a lot of things which aren’t always right. Mike needs to get to the point where he just has Harvey’s back no matter what.

He needs to realise that Harvey’s playing a longer game of chess and sometimes he might make a move that doesn’t seem right, but in the long run he’s got the interest of his client in mind. Mike has to learn the art of that. So he’s going to be a lot more reluctant about doing anything that Harvey wouldn’t want him to do after what happened at the end of last season.

Mike’s lost his grandmother, his best friend. He only has Harvey right now. Is that one of the reasons he gets along with himIJ

I think that’s got a lot to do with it. He just doesn’t have anywhere else to turn and he is his only friend in the world. There’s also a new relationship with Rachel (Meghan Markle) and that I think that brings about a big change in his life because it’s a mature and loving relationship at least at this point in the story. He has opened up to her, can be honest with her. So he’s got someone to turn to except Harvey. That takes some of the pressure off his relationship with Harvey because now he has he has his own life and someone else to trust too. Harvey becomes like the mentor professionally but not personally.

What all is the show dealing with this season and howIJ

A big part of what we’re dealing with this season is obviously Harvey being very upset about the merger with Darby and it’s really about revealing a lot of these insecurities that exist between him and Jessica. It’s about loyalty and to my loyalty to Harvey and how Mike is. Where is Mike going to standIJ We’re using the Michelle Fairley this season case to explore these issues.

After seeing the first episode of the season Rachel seemed to struggle. She wanted Mike to quit and didn’t get into Harvard while she knows that Mike is living a lie. Is that going to be a dark cloud over the relationshipIJ

I think that any woman or any person really would have those feelings, that’s a part of it. You know Mike just waltzed into this and she is having to do more. So, we’re actually seeing her go through the real process of what it takes to become a lawyer which is many years of work. And a stoner just kind of fumbled into this situation — so I think that’s going to be a good part of it. look I also think that as an intuitive woman she’s also highly forgiving, so I don’t think it’s going to like plague the relationship. But I think it definitely is one of the elements of conflict that exists between the two of them for sure.
