Ram Gopal Varma has compiled his underworld knowledge in Satya 2. He shared details with I Kaur

He came, he saw, he fought and he died — that was the fate of Satya, a man who got off a train into the nasty city of Mumbai only to fall into a vortex that had no way out. That was 1998. However, in 2013, Satya is back, but not as the person who gets caught in situations. Instead as one who creates them. Ram Gopal Varma’s forthcoming film Satya 2 is not a sequel or a prequel but an ode to the underworld with a squeeze of corporate drama. “I have always been interested in the dark side of human psychology. People who go against the regular norms and rules of society — such characters attract me. Satya was the beginning of this fascination I had with gangsters and Satya 2 completes the circle,” he said.

However, the filmmaker said in no uncertain terms that this is his last film on the underworld. “Whatever my knowledge of the underworld is and all that I gathered in the last few years, I have put it all in Satya 2. So, I feel there is nothing left now to tell from my side. There are a lot of other films on the underworld, too, but as far as I am concerned, this genre is over for me,” he shared.

According to him, Satya 2’s main lead Satya is an embodiment of a certain philosophy that he understood from his study of the underworld. Thus, he said that there is no weakness in Satya this time as compared to first film. “I think Satya’s character is a diametrically opposite this time. He now has tremendous clarity of what he wants to do and how to go about it. It is his methodical and scientific approach towards crime and the objective for what he commits that makes him unique. When I picture him like that, technically I don’t see any weakness in him,” he added.

Satya 2 also comes with a completely new cast with Puneet Singh Ratn, Anaika Soti and Aradhna Gupta marking their debut. Varma believes that new actors always bring realism in the film. He explained, “Even the first Satya was not a star film. I think genre films which have intense drama need new actors as they will always bring in a sense of reality. The audience takes them to be real people. I think it always works if you have new people for genre films.”

Post this film’s release today, Varma is all set to step into a new genre of filmmaking. “I will make a romantic film now. However, it will be a realistic one. When one says love story, it immediately gives you the imagery of Switzerland and good looking people. I want to do the opposite. I want to make a love story in a Satya kind of an atmosphere. The film will go on floor in February,” he summed up.
