Gaurav Singh tells Prerna Sharma that his camera helps him read human faces
The reason why some human faces attract the attention of photographers particularly, is because those faces reflect purity of heart and emotions. Those emotions are captured so perfectly that no one needs words to describe them. Gaurav Singh, believes in the strength of those emotions and looks out for new faces that he can capture in his camera. Apart from human faces, elements of nature form an important part of Singh’s works. His works are displayed at lalit Kala Akademi, the exhibition is called Arrested Moments.
Singh started photography as a hobby a few years ago. “By profession, I am an infrastructure project consultant and I spend most of my day in office but I somehow manage to take out time to click pictures, especially the human faces,” said Haryana-based Singh, who took over two years to come up with his ongoing exhibition.
“Human faces and nature inspire me. I love to capture the mist in the air, water droplets that rest like pearls on leaves and the shadows,” he shared.
Singh carries his camera every time he is out of his home. His better half has also been the subject of his pictures. “In this exhibition, I am displaying 18 images of my wife. Whenever I need a model to pose for me, she willingly agrees. Having a wife who does not mind being on the frame is a great thing,” he smiled.
Some pictures, out of his fifty black-and-white and colour images, highlight different facets of a woman. “Black and white photography has a different appeal. I think emotions can be better expressed in black and white. For example the human eye will look beautiful in colours but the emotions can only be highlighted in black and white picture. I like colours also, as they add happiness to the picture,” explained Singh.
The lensman has captured an image of a lady with one discerning eye, and that’s more than enough to grab the attention. The picture is done in sepia effect and he has named it Enigma. “I prefer to focus on a woman’s face as it can convey different emotions. A woman adds an aesthetic value to the picture.” He also showcases simplicity of life in his photographs, “which is the most difficult task.”
He added, “Photography is an expression of my thoughts and perceptions. The mystery of human faces and how easily some faces reflect what’s going on in their hearts attract me. As human beings we all are close to nature and as an artist I find an intimate connection with its elements and therefore I am drawn towards them.” Singh travelled to the Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary in Haryana and the Okhla Bird Sanctuary in Noida to capture the images of blue bulls and birds.
