Designer Rocky S has two new feathers in his cap and we’ll be seeing them flutter during this year’s India Resort Fashion Week. He chatted with Team Viva

Amidst the sun, sand and shutterbugs in Mumbai this December, celebrity designer Rocky S will be promoting resort wear to the world.

Rocky has been appointed as Creative Director for this year’s India Resort Fashion Week (IRFW), which will also host the first India Fashion Awards and felicitate fashion talent across various industries. Bipasha Basu is the brand ambassador of the event, organised with E-Sense Entertainment.

The designer feels that resort wear has great potential in India and events like these are a welcome change.

“It is good exposure for people in the city. The biggest misconception lies in thinking that resort wear is just confined to bikinis and kaftans. But it varies from short fitted dresses to full-length flowy gowns, semi-fitted mid-length dresses, short tunics, tops etc. So I look forward to a great show and response to the brands,” said Rocky, who styled Bollywood beauties like Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif and Shilpa Shetty. He once designed a desi choli for socialite Paris Hilton during an India visit.

“Resort wear has become year-round fashion wear. It is comfortable in all climates and has also become recognisable and significant international business,” commented Rocky. “It has created a niche in the fashion industry. This line is for vacationers, comprising complimenting styles and silhouettes.”

He added, “In our country, holidays are important for the fashion consciousness and this kind of fashion week sets new trends. In fact, all designers participating will make wearable dresses, instead of just something for the ramp.” Rocky elaborated that for him fashion is about comfort.

“To me, it epitomises chic, sexiness and glam. But don’t ignore your body type. Being comfortable is another name for fashion. If a fat girl  only wraps herself in a kaftan, she may not look as good, as she might in a long gown.”

Being Creative Director is a huge responsibility for him.

“I have not decided if I will participate or not, because pressure will be huge. last time, we had music concerts and other things. This time we will only focus on the garments.” The event will focus on tier-two cities and prices will be reasonable, we were told.
