With dishes like Amitabh Bachchan burger to chakki peesing peesing kulfi in the menu, Filmy cafe and bar is providing a food mashup which may not stand out in the end. Arjita Mishra checks in
As the café is named, Filmy, the interior which we found was completely in accordance to it. From 80s to 90s and till the latest 2015, it had posters of almost every film hanging on the walls. We are here talking about Filmy Café and Bar by DeeZ. As we entered into the café, a loud music of bollywood song welcomed us. We found some of the famous dialogues likeMoonche ho toh nathulal jaisi, Mere Karan Arjun aayenge, Ye hath nahi phansi ka fanda hai and what not more framed and hanging on the wall.
Not only this, but also the cushions which were lying on the couch, had the poster of Mughal-e-azam and photos of evergreen Dev Anand. When we asked the owner of the café, Thakur Bhuvan Singh, the idea and concept behind the name, he said, “As the café is on the same floor where the theatre is, it gave our customer a filmy feeling. When someone goes to watch a film, he or she has a dialogue going on in the mind. So, we thought if we are opening a café next to a theatre then why not give it a filmy name so we gave this name. Our interiors and some of the dishes are also given the name of actors, character and dialogue of the films.”
The very first dish which was presented before us was chilli mushroom, fried and tossed with spring onion, capsicum and Chinese sauces. As we took a bite of mushroom, a crunch sound came from it and it was bit spicy for us. Another dish from starter category which was presented was paneer malai tikka with green chutney. When we took first bite of tikka, we found it little bland but with the green chutney, it was tastier.
When we came towards Italian section, we were given Pasta as you like….! So what we got was penne pasta in mixed sauce (red and white sauce) with the veggies bell peppers capsicum et al. over which oregano seasoning was sprinkled to add taste and flavour . The pasta was bland and when we asked chef lalit about it he replied, “We usually keep our pasta bland because most of our customers don’t like spicy pasta but if any of our customers asks us to make spicy pasta then only we add spice to it.”
While surfing through the menu, in burger section, there was a burger which was given a name Amitabh Bachchan burger and we got a smile on our face as soon as we read it. “Amitabh Bachchan burger is bigger in size and that is the reason we gave this name. It not only suits the name, but it also goes with our filmy theme,” said Singh.
Then we were presented Pakistani veg handi biryani from the biryani section. The gravy of the biryani was served separately and we were told that the gravy is cooked from the secret spices from Pakistan. “The gravy is made from tomato paste by adding red chilies in more quantity along with the ‘secret spices’ of Pakistan,” said the chef .
When we had a spoon full of biryani in our mouth, we got the real desi taste of biryani like it was cooked in desi chulha. By sharing his secret of making the biryani, chef lalit said, “We have tossed the vegetables and rice together in a pan and then we kept it in a handi which we closed with the help of aata after which it was given a dum for four to five minutes which adds original desi flavour to it.” Trust us, Pakistani biryani is what we will recommend you to have in your main course.
And then we came to the last and final part to end our perfect lunch which was dessert. In this section, we were served Fried chocolate bars with vanilla ice cream. In a margarita glass, at the bottom strawberry syrup was poured on which maida coated fried chocolate bars along with the vanilla ice cream was presented. When we asked chef whether the chocolate did not melt while frying it, chef pointed out, “We use to keep chocolate bars in the fridge for two days to make it hard so after doing maida coating, when we fry it, it does not melt.”
We also had a pista kulfi with kiwi sauce and dry fruits which was named as chakki peesing peesing. As this dialogue of great actor Dharmendra from Sholay won millions of heart, in the same way, the dessert also won our heart and believe us this was the perfect ending for our meal.
