While the whole of India is on Cloud Nine for Deepika Padukone’s first-ever appearance at the MTV Europe Music Awards, the fashion pundits at a renowned British tabloid seemed to be upset with her attire at the event and chose to mark her down. It also featured Deepika Padukone in their list of “worst-dressed guests at the MTV EMAs” and termed her look “Bollywood blunder.” The leading tabloid Daily Mail’s words read: “Bollywood blunder: Indian actress Deepika Padukone may be stunning but her swamp green bralet and skirt combo did nothing for her sensational figure.”
Another publication, Mirror, stated, “Indian film actress Deepika Padukone posed on the red carpet in what looked like a pair of giant dark green curtains as a skirt, a black sparkling bralet and huge chandelier earrings.” TheSun.co.uk, spared DP from trenchant remarks. “Deepika Padukone chose a quirky green silk dress which was slashed to the thigh,” said their article.
looking forward to the release of her big Hollywood debut, xXx: Return of Xander Cage, Deepika chose to flaunt Monisha Jaisingh and Shaleena Nathani in an olive green thigh-high slit trail skirt teamed with heavily embellished bodice and matching bomber jacket. She went on to add oomph with statement Valliyan fringe earrings and a Balmain belt. She completed her look with smokey eyes and a nude lipstick along with a side-parted low ponytail. Her look was in keeping with projecting her character, Serena.
Many would find this look too edgy and out of their comfort zone, but let’s not forget it was a music awards event, a perfect place to rock that edgy look. But because it was her first red carpet appearance, we expected more grace and elegance from the innate fashionista that she is. Perhaps she went a bit overboard. But we are sure there were more celebrity goof-ups, too, that were not written about simply because they do not figure in theForbes’ list of the highest paid global actresses. As designer Anupama Dayal put it succinctly, “That’s the whole point. Deepika is Deepika, she can even carry a curtain. I don’t think her outfit required any controversy.”
Defending her creation, Jaising posted Deepika’s image on a photo-sharing app and captioned it, “Military green is a functional and strong colour. It has a tough, almost androgynous appeal for all of those women warriors out there! Deepika is unstoppable, fit and fierce; making a perfect muse for my Artemisia Gown. I’m thrilled to collaboratively envision with Shaleena Nathani, and create this very special piece for Deepika.”
Designer Nikhil Mehra also thought the look could have been more fun, keeping the event in mind. “It’s an award function which is not all-out glam. So Deepika could have experimented more and had a bit more fun with it. Though I don’t mind the skirt too much, I’m on the fence about the embellished bodice,” he said.
For designer Suneet Varma, being on the green team worked for the Bollywood star. “I think she looks great and I particularly like her choice of colour. It’s a fantastic shade, like the one inspired by chartreuse liqueur. Also, the large sequin texture on the jacket and bustier, although all-out blingy, is very modern. And, the draped skirt does complete justice to those toned legs! Very chic n’ sexy,” he said.
However, Deepika’s sartorial choice impressed some. Calling Deepika “the epitome of style,” fashion designer Ritu Beri said, “I absolutely loved her ensemble, especially the creativity with which she put it together. Deepika has inherent grace and elegance which she carries with every look she adorns.”
Bringing the world’s best talent under one roof, the Europe Music Awards promised a night filled with entertainment, a night to remember with an epic clash of the young and bold with Justin Bieber squaring off v/s Beyoncé as the two artists who have bagged maximum nominations, followed by renowned artists such as lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, and Shawn Mendes who are not far behind.
Deepika herself was seen presenting the best video award to Canadian music sensation The Weeknd for Starboy ft. Daft Punk. “This is my first time at such an event so I don’t know what to expect. I am going there just to have fun. I understand the platform and what it is all about; it is a music award and I love music. I listen to a lot of music of the people, who are playing there so right now everything seems surreal in that sense. It’s going to be a fun and magical evening and I just want to experience that,” Deepika said in a statement before the event.
