Singer Kamal Khan, who performed here recently, tells Darpan Mago that he will now be a part of Coke Studio
He was born and brought up in Reethkherhi village near Patiala in Punjab. His interests were quite different from his peer group but he pursued his goal of becoming a singer and often faced wrath of his father. He won the reality singing competition Awaz Punjab Di but the win didn’t do wonders to his career and he started working in a factory that used to make household broom handles. After working for over two years in the factory, some change happened for good. Today, we know Kamal Khan for singing songs like Ishq Sufiana, Gori Teri Pyar Main and Wallah Re Wallah.
The singer, who performed at The Hiatus, Clarion Collection-Qutab Hotel, recalls his journey and says, “I learnt music from my mother. She often used to hum old Pakistani songs and I learnt all of them from her. She has been my first music inspiration. My life took a turn after I won Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. Before this my father didn’t want me to become a singer. I had a deep urge to prove to my father that I was worth my salt. So I once took him to collect my first salary in the broom factory and he changed his mind after that.”
After his recent fame, Kamal chooses to be a modest man. “Vishal-Shekhar once told me that no matter how high you rise in life but never leave the sight of the ground. These words have left an indelible mark on me,” he says.
Speaking about the Punjabi music industry, Kamal mentions that the state is rich in talent and many young people have started to turn their fates around. “Hard work and sincerity is the key to success. No matter wherever you might be in your singing career, you should be genuine.”
Kamal is now planning to be a part of Coke Studio.
