Ritu Shivpuri starts with a sharp and perfectionist character, says Debasrita Chakraborty

Actress Ritu Shivpuri, who is best remembered for her role opposite Govinda in the movie, Aankhen, has  ventured into small screen with the third season of the franchise Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon. The show, which saw good TRPs during the first two seasons, sees the actor in a lead role. Shivpuri plays the role of Indrani Nararayan Vashishth, who is a perfectionist like her.  “My character is mysterious  as well as complex and brilliantly written. It has a lot of layers. She is a wonderful mother but is also like a tigress when it comes to protecting her family and can go to any extent in its pursuit. Indrani forgets the line between wrong and right.” Shivpuri says that Indrani is a strong character akin to Amitabh Bachchan. “Today women characters have much more definition, depth and have a lot to do. They have a lot of importance. I have been born and brought up with ethics of being independent,” she adds.

Shivpuri sees the increasing trend of web series as a positive development. She says, “Growth and expansion is always good. People from different sections prefer different types of shows unlike in other countries. So, to create a show that caters to all the sections at a time is a difficult challenge. Nowadays, there are many actors with good potential and this expansion of web series gives a lot of scope to people. The formats are new and scripts are different, which is really good.” Shivpuri would want to be a part of a web series if she gets the opportunity. “I love acting. For me acting in theatres, films, TV series, web series or any medium, is good. I also love to play different characters,” she adds.

Exposure to media has an advantage as well as a disadvantage. She shares, “The lack of control over the content is a huge disadvantage but shows also uphold the culture and tradition of our society, because of which we are alive is an advantage.”

Talking about challenges, Shivpuri says, “The character was a challenge for me. The definition of acting is playing somebody that you are not. You get out of your comfort zone and you imbibe the texture, feeling, qualities of the character. My reel life character is very different from my real life and I had to think like my character because unless you understand your character and love it, you will never be able to perform well.”

Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon 3 also stars the television heartthrob Barun Sobti as Advay Singh Raizada and is set against the backdrop of the holy city of Allahabad.
