Bun and tea

The international chain Papparoti is known for its savoury buns, wide variety of coffee and beverages but it is not limited to known hits, says Team Viva

As you enter the open-ended restaurant, the sweet fragrance of caramel invites you. We ordered quite a few delicacies as the menu at the international food chain Papparoti had a plethora of interesting and innovative dishes on offer at its Noida branch. The restaurant started its culinary journey with Malaysia in 2003. With over 410 outlets spread across 18 countries including  Dubai, Australia, Canada, China, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Indonesia. It first made its presence felt in Hyderabad and then opened its doors for NCR. The waiter brought us the order at Godspeed and the first one to arrive at the table was their signature bun. With the bitter smell of coffee enticing our nostrils, the bun was the perfect shade of gold. The scrumptious and aromatic bun was crispy on the outside while light and fluffy on the inside. The coffee-caramel coated bun with a butter filling in the centre was a blend of sweet and salty flavours, and we were told that it was freshly baked.

Going further, we also gave their Nutella and hazelnut bun a try and paired it with the classic vanilla ice cream. The bun drizzled with the chocolate spread and topped with a generous dose of hazelnuts was delicious and the ice cream toned down its sweetness as per our liking. We paired it with Iced Caramel Macchiato whose consistency was a bit watery. The coffee in it was not quite strong and it made the drink way too sweet for our taste buds.

What followed was the Piri Piri panini which had marinated cottage cheese, tomatoes and onions cooked in Piri-Piri sauce with mayo served in Italian panini bread with coleslaw on the side. The creamy cottage cheese, crunchy veggies and the Piri-Piri sauce gave it a distinct taste of spice which made the sandwich our favourite. We had the sandwich with a refreshing and tangy orange and passion fruit iced tea, which had fresh orange pulp that enhanced its taste. The only shortcoming was the taste of passion fruit which was missing.

People can relish classics like eggs benedict (poached egg over chicken ham/sauteed spinach with butter toasted muffin topped with hollandaise sauce), Southwestern chicken salad (oven roasted bell pepper, onion slices, kidney beans and roasted chicken slices tossed with southwestern dressing and rested on crunchy bed of lettuce), vegetable Minestrone soup (thick tomato-based soup made with vegetables, addition of pasta and garnished with pesto sauce, served with garlic pesto crostini),  and Mediterranean egg shakshouka (two eggs poached on a sauce of tomato, chilli, pepper and onion, served with multigrain bread).

Then came to our table the highlight of the brunch, vegetarian double chow — a hollowed bread filled with appetising vegetable curry with cottage cheese cubes. The gravy from the curry fillings soaked into the walls of the crispy bread. Bunny Chow has its origins in South Africa with lamb, chicken, beans and chips with curry gravy as its main ingredients. The comfort meal instantly won us over with its rich flavours. We decided to end the meal with classic mac and cheese but to our disappointment, the macaroni was not cooked to perfection and also the cheese was way too less. We also tried two of their signature teas — Rosa and Chamomile breeze in which the latter fared better. The teas came in a transparent kettle with a candle on the bottom for the heating process. The waiter put the tea bags in the kettle after which we had to sit and watch the hourglass for light, medium or strong brew which was an interesting sight. So we are saying, stick to the signature dishes while at Papparoti and do try their teas.
