Yami Gautam, who was trending on Twitter due to her affinity for a fairness product, feels it is important to be comfortable in your skin. She spoke to Karan Bhardwaj
Actors becoming the butt of Twitter jokes is a latest trend online. The newest addition to the club was Vicky Donor heroine Yami Gautam who became the ‘centre of humour’ on the microblogging website for her affinity for a fairness cream. However, the actor has taken the criticism sportingly. She says jokes are meant to laugh. “A couple of jokes were really funny. I rolled over the floor laughing. I didn’t get upset because I don’t take such things seriously. Things go out of proportion when media picks them up. Otherwise, they are just meant to be enjoyed since people posting them are also making fun out of it,” she told us. Sharing her side of the story, she said she doesn’t believe that skin colour has got anything to do with the confidence and career of women. “I think it’s important to be comfortable in your skin,” she told us before attending a gathering for a diamond brand Nazraana (Rio Tinto Diamonds). Yami’s personal style is minimalistic and she is not a fan of gaudy jewellery. “Every woman is in awe of diamonds. I adore them too. But I always choose less jewellery. I think natural beauty should not be overshadowed,” she said.
The actor is the face of several brands and she says she chooses them after a careful analysis. “For me be it ads or films, there is no difference. I choose endorsements like I choose my films,” she said.
Yami was last seen opposite Ali Zaffar in Total Siyappa. Though the film couldn’t recreate Vicky Donor’s success, the actor is happy being part of it. “I believe in the journey of good films regardless of box office output. I don’t believe in end results. As long as you are getting a good experience and learning new things, it’s absolutely fine. I have my expectations but success is not in my hands,” she said.
After her successful stint opposite Ayushmann Khurrana, she was expected to be more visible on screen. But for Yami, quality precedes quantity. “It’s not that I am choosy. I don’t want to repeat myself. People were offering me similar roles. I want to explore different kinds of cinema,” she said.
What inspires Yami to look good and keep fitIJ “The biggest motivation is the competition around. Bollywood is a place where excuses don’t work. Who cares if you are unwell or introvert. So I am particular about my fitness. I eat healthy and work out pretty hard. It’s all part and parcel of game,” she shared.
Yami is also doing films down South. She is busy doing Gautham Vasudev Menon’s next. Does she find any difference between the two regionsIJ “No! I failed to spot any difference apart from the language. In fact, people down South are more particular about the schedules. They know what and when to release,” said the actor. She will also be seen in Prabhudeva’s Action Jackson. Though she doesn’t have any role model in film industry, she is inspired by Amitabh Bachchan. “His energy is infectious. I am smitten by the way he reinvented his career before a decade. He has maintained his original persona through thick and thin,” she said. In her free time, she likes reading variety of books on religion, philosophy and fiction.
