Best from the tribes

The lalit Kala Akademi is hosting its National Tribal Art Conclave 2013-14 till April 6 at Rabindra Bhavan. It has brought 100 tribal and contemporary artists together to experiment and create art forms to narrativise their landscape.

The conclave is an attempt to acknowledge the roots of a great artistic tradition established by communities who have been consistently kept outside established art history through blatant marginalisation and oppressions. KK Chakravarty, chairman of Akademi said, “The transformation, over the past two centuries, of forests from non-fiscal, non-timber, ecological habitats into timber mines, empty areas for development, carbon sinks and fiscal resource have deprived folk and tribal arts from the inspiration derived from consanguinity and kinship, dream time imagery and increase rituals, and the co-evolutionary inter dependence of human and non human, organic and inorganic communities. The ceremonies of exorcism, benediction, propitiation and fecundation of the creative and procreative forces and cycles of nature have lost their anchors and points of reference.”
