Prioritising self-care and stress management enhances productivity and creates a fulfilling work-life balance, says Upasana Arora
Women juggle demanding careers with personal responsibilities. Whether they’re leading teams, managing complex projects, or making critical decisions, the constant drive to excel in their professional lives can result in chronic stress and burnout. However, prioritising self-care and stress management is crucial not only for personal well-being but also for sustaining professional success over the long term. Nurturing one’s mental and physical health can improve resilience, increase productivity, and build a greater sense of balance in life.
Mindfulness is one of the most effective tools for managing stress. Mindfulness practices like meditation, deep breathing, and grounding techniques help women stay focused in the moment, reducing anxiety and preventing negative thought spirals that often arise in high-pressure situations.
Mindfulness practices are effective tools for managing stress, especially for women in high-pressure roles. Techniques like meditation, deep breathing, and grounding exercises help individuals stay focused and present, reducing anxiety and breaking negative thought cycles that often arise in stressful situations. 10 to 15 minutes of daily meditation can promote calmness and mental clarity by encouraging a focus on the breath, allowing thoughts to come and go without judgment. Similarly, deep breathing exercises like diaphragmatic breathing help activate the body’s relaxation response, lowering heart rate and blood pressure, which can have a profound impact on reducing overall stress levels.
Women should try to maintain effective time management skills in high-pressure roles. By prioritising tasks, delegating responsibilities, and setting clear boundaries, women can manage their workload without sacrificing personal time or well-being. Further, physical activity is another powerful tool for stress management. Regular exercise not only maintains physical health but also releases endorphins, which help boost mood and energy levels. Women should aim to incorporate regular physical activity into their schedules, such as jogging, yoga, or even a brisk walk during lunch breaks, to improve mental clarity and reduce stress. Additionally, taking short movement breaks throughout the day can relieve physical tension and help clear the mind, especially for those who spend long hours at a desk or in meetings. Combining exercise with adequate rest and relaxation can significantly improve both mental and physical well-being.
Sometimes, the pressures of high-pressure roles can become overwhelming. In these instances, seeking professional help is not a sign of weakness but a necessary step toward maintaining mental health. Speaking with a therapist can help women manage stress, develop coping strategies, and gain a new perspective on work-related challenges. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and other therapeutic techniques can be particularly effective for stress management. Professional coaching or attending stress management workshops can provide women with specific tools and techniques for managing high-pressure situations more easily.
Self-care and stress management are important components of sustaining long-term success, both professionally and personally, for women in high-pressure roles. By integrating mindfulness practices, managing time effectively, incorporating physical activity, setting boundaries, building a supportive network, and seeking professional help when needed, women can overcome the complexities of their roles without compromising their health. Self-care is not a luxury—it is a necessity.
