CLW created a record in locomotive production during the last year

Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW), a production unit under Ministry of Railways plays a key role in making Indian Railways self-reliant in the field of electric locomotive production, thus, becoming a prime mover for the Indian economy.

The previous year had been a challenging year. CLW faced many difficulties in keeping up the pace of the production owing to the COVID pandemic.

In its saga of making Atmanirbhar Bharat truly successful, CLW scripted another page in history by turning out a record of 467 locos in the calendar year January-December 2021. This is the best ever production figure anyone has achieved in a year.

This was achieved due to their continuous trend of production streaks of 40+ locos per month.

CLW produced 11,000 locomotives of various classes in 70 years, which comprises 2,351 steam locomotives (1950-1968), 842 diesel locomotives (1968 -1993) and 7,936 electric locomotives of various types from 1961 till December 31, 2021. About 90 per cent of all electric locomotive ever used by IR have come from assembly lines of CLW.

They also produced 100 electric locomotives in 81 working days in financial year 2021-22.

Satish Kumar Kashyup, the general manager, congratulated the entire team of CLW and appreciated their effort in the successful production of the locomotives.
