Nagaland-born designer Filafi Fithu has designed footwear for a 3D Italian film. She chatted with Karan Bhardwaj
Why is it that only Indian actors who are fetching meaty roles in big projects abroad should be talked about and discussed at homeIJ Indian fashion scene too is blossoming. Footwear designer Filafi Fithu has designed shoes for a forthcoming 3D Italian movie luomo Volante. Born in Nagaland’s small town Meluri, the young designer is creating waves in the global fashion arena. “I am lucky that I got the opportunity to design the shoes for luomo Volante. The director of the movie happened to see some of my shoes on Internet through a mutual friend. He liked them and I was shortlisted and eventually selected,” she said.
The movie that stars popular faces Adelmo Togliani and Bianca Guaccero is based on different eras. “It is set from the 80s to the present. I had to do in-depth research on the fashion scenario and the trends of the 80s and 90s. Then I studied the script and visualised what the movie’s requirement might be and coordinated with the costume designers. Eventually the collection for the movie came out very well,” she shared not wanting to reveal further.
Interestingly, Fithu graduated in History and got into a government job through the State Civil Services Examinations very early. “But I decided to move on from there as I like being on my own. Fashion has always interested me. And since I love shoes I decided to follow this dream,” she said. The designer, who owns label on her name, has also launched her store in GK I. “I try to offer luxury at an affordable price. My brand stands for timeless understated elegance. It aims to strike a balance between the classic and the trendy. My shoes are manufactured in Italy. We use only quality material, leather to ensure comfort and quality thereby giving value for money to the customers,” she informed.
What is the scope of footwear designing in IndiaIJ “There is a huge scope as far as demands are concerned. We are becoming more fashion forward. But I guess we as consumers still have to go a long way. We need to know more about quality,” she said.
Fithu wants to strengthen her brand’s presence globally. “My shoes are designed to relate to women from every part of the world. My plan is to take the brand international, as the response in Europe is very positive, while simultaneously opening a few more outlets across India. I would also love to design for Bollywood,” she said. Designing bags and accessories is next on her list.
