Delhiites were merely out of the Weekender hangover but Avicii managed to get them back on track. Iknoor Kaur attended his concert at the Sunburn Arena and spotted an unusual trend

The roads were blocked, the flags were up high, the parking lots were full and the passes sold out — the NCR had probably never waited this eagerly to watch a man play music before. The night of December 8 was not only the day Avicii played in the Sunburn Arena at Buddh International Circuit but also the day when the city woke up to DJ Magazine’s third best DJ in the world.

His songs went from being chartbusters to the anthem of every party in town. Where nobody thought he could make another song like levels, he came up with Wake Me Up and pulled back his listeners. Tim Bergling aka Avicii spread a feeling that even country musicians couldn’t ignore. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that the Avicii fever may have fuelled India’s growing interest in EDM. Thus, it was clear that the night was going to be an ‘epic’ one for all those who needed a musical massage.

The sound resonated miles ahead of the venue and one could feel the energy as they approached the stadium. All one needed was a pair of dancing shoes and the rest was inevitable. Getting in was a task though. The arena and the ticket counters were definitely overcrowded. Signals were jammed and there was no way out once you were in.

Everybody was a little disappointed with Avicii’s entrance because all one could see on stage was a silhouette behind the console. However, Avicii has his own style and suiting that presentation of his, he began with his hit track Silhouettes. That was it and the crowd immediately jumped with excitement. Avicii’s classic hits were the highlight of the evening, since those were the ones enjoyed by the audience the most. There is one thing with Indian audiences that goes unnoticed at every concert — they love listening to international DJs but stick to only a few songs after a while. Thus, the only songs the audience cheered to all night were Avicii’s popular ones like Hey Brother, levels, Silhouettes and Wake Me Up. An unknown member in the crowd didn’t mince words when he called songs he didn’t know as ‘fillers’. Never mind that attitude, we think Avicii realised it too. Once he played levels and heard people sing along with utmost dedication, there was no looking back. Unusually, the relay of songs was a little repetitive after that, not that anyone was complaining. The crowd said once more and once more it was.

Surprisingly the crowd was a good mix. One could easily spot school children dancing their hearts out and also see a few elders with kids on their shoulders. The college and working crowd was overwhelming and classy. The night ended with a bang as Avicii finally played Wake Me Up featuring Aloe Blacc on repeat.

Once the concert was over, people were back on the road struggling to get out. However, some preferred to lie back on the grass and wait till the way was clear. All said and done, with all the craziness, we are sure Delhiites won’t forget this concert for a long time.
