Deepak Dobriyal told I Kaur why he felt the need to break the streotype and present himself in a new avatar in his forthcoming film Chor Chor Super Chor

You saw his angry avatar in Omkara. He played an innocent shop owner in Delhi-6 and in Tanu weds Manu he was seen as R Madhavan’s friend. After working in over 10 films and winning two awards, theatre actor, Deepak Dobriyal, is looking forward to an image makeover in Bollywood.  He will be playing the lead in his forthcoming film Chor Chor Super Chor.

Deepak was associated with Asmita Theatre Group for seven years and had no Bollywood plans. However, he said that the need for money forced him to look for roles in films. “There is no money in theatre. I can’t live for six months on Rs2,000. I have a family to look after to. The lack of money can even take away your confidence. Everybody in theatre today seeks shelter in Bollywood. Many of them move after six months or one year, I took seven years to make my move and doing both together is not possible. Theatre requires time,” he shared.

Deepak made his debut on the silver screen with Vishal Bhardwaj’s Omkara and owes his success in Bollywood to him. “It was only because of him that I got a chance to work in a film like Omkara. He has helped me reach this platform and create my own identity in the film industry,” he said.

The actor was critically acclaimed for the films following Omkara. They were Delhi-6, Shaurya and Tanu weds Manu. His forthcoming movie will present him in a different avatar. Elaborating on his role he said, “The story is about this group of people who are expert thieves and I am one of them. I am this person with whom everything keeps going wrong. I am simple, but in the end I turn into a villain because of the situations I face. So I found it very challenging. It was an entertaining role and I feel that I should experiment with my acting as much as I can.”

He added that he did this film because of his attachment with FTII.

“The director is from FTII and I feel that people from there are very hard-working. I do at least two student films every year, without taking any fee because I feel that if this can help them then why not. It indirectly helps me also make more contacts,” he said.

The actor wants to do more experimental films to get popularity. “Who will come watch my film if I am not popularIJ I want to do experimental work and I am known for that. I don’t want people to think that they’ve wasted their money on me,” he said.

Deepak shared that he likes Anurag Kashyap and Dibakar Banerjee for the unconventional films they make.

“Very few people understand different kind of cinema. Even my friends don’t understand the need for doing dark characters and making different films. These directors are bringing about a change and are waking up the audiences,” he added.

Chor Chor Super Chor will release on August 2. After that Deepak has three more films in pipeline. Sooper Se Oopar, where he is playing a negative role,  Democracy Private limited and Tanu weds Manu Part 2.
