We tracked down few of the green and clean initiatives that companies and hotels in the country are taking for a better environment

The world is on the cusp of a clean energy revolution. New technologies help provide clean energy by harnessing the power of the sun, wind, and other renewable resources. Other technologies can enable more efficient use of energy in buildings, industry, and vehicles. These technologies, when coupled with supportive policies, can significantly reduce carbon pollution from traditional fossil fuels, improve local air quality, create jobs, enhance energy security, and provide improved access to energy around the world.

Mytrah Energy (India) Pvt ltd has the largest wind data bank in India, being the only independent power producer that has over 200 wind masts across the country and focuses on developing clean energy in the country. The company aims at strengthening the renewable energy sector so as to bring down these pollution levels thus providing electricity to the consumers. Renewable energy plays an extremely crucial role in conserving the environment today. Energy sources such as wind and solar are the country’s hope towards a better and cleaner environment.

The UJAlA programme, executed by Energy Efficiency Services limited (EESl), under the Ministry of Power has shown that government programmes can facilitate swift adoption of low carbon technologies.

The impact of UJAlA has been such that India’s share in the global lED industry has risen from 0.1 percent to 12 percent.  13 Indian states are already part of the movement and EESl plans to roll out the scheme in a few more states in the coming months. Presently under this scheme, EESl has distributed over 11 crore lED bulbs.

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler AG, has taken solar power usage at its manufacturing plant in Oragadam near Chennai to the next level. With the completion of a major addition to the plant’s existing photovoltaic installations, the overall technical capacity has increased from 0.8 to 3.3 Megawatts.

The new solar power field, built on previously idle stretches of land within the plant’s highly modern commercial vehicle test track area, consists of more than 10,000 new polycrystalline photovoltaic panels. Thanks to the upgrade, the share of solar power is now covering more than one fourth of the average daytime electrical power need of DICV’s operations on site.

Chilika lake

We know about Chilika, India’s brackish water lagoon spread across Odisha and home to several species of migratory birds. But over the years increase in tourist footfall and encroachment has not only polluted the place but also posed a threat to avian dwellers. Chilika lake Project being undertaken by IPE Global. The company is providing technical assistance to build the Tourism master plan for Chilika lake, to protect the fragile ecosystem.

Their main focus is on the three identified clusters namely nature, adventure and cultural heritage. The area around Chilika is generic and mostly involves pilgrimage sites like Bhubaneshwar. Hence, the need to be more cautious and careful is paramount. The priority in the nature cluster is the area around the dolphin habitat. Without disrupting the habitat, the development of the tourism is closely monitored with fixed rules and restrictions. The threshold is maintained for both time and space.

The attempt to preserve the cultural heritage involves the involvement of the locals in this project with no NGO’s or coordinators working instead whoever is involved has signed up for this project voluntarily.

The Taj Mahal Hotel

The hotel employs energy efficient practices in all areas of operation. lED lights and light dimmers are used in guest floor corridors and in the lobby; water level sensors have been installed in the hotel to avoid wastage of water due to overflowing; a rain water harvesting program has been initiated by the Hotel and solar panels are used for pre-heating of water.

Regular energy audits are conducted by the hotel to understand their performance on various environmental parameters.
