The cast of Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi, Sonakshi Sinha, Diana Penty, Jassi Gill, and director Mudassar Aziz, talk to Ayushi Sharma about the second act of the much loved rom-com

They came, they ran and they conquered — with their hilarious first film. Not surprisingly then, expectations for the second one run pretty high. But Mudassar Aziz is confident that Happy’s escapades will tickle your funny bones, again.

The first instalment of the film followed Diana Penty, a runaway bride, to her shenanigans in Lahore and back to Amritsar. In the sequel, helmed by Sonakshi Sinha, who is also named Harpreet aka Happy, the cast will take off to China in a comedy of errors.

However, with Sinha taking over the lead space from Penty, could there have been certain negative emotions in play, so we asked the latter about it.

“When Mudassar narrated the story to me, I think it was really beautiful how he managed to keep the two Happys completely different from each other yet similar in a way. Personality wise, I think, me and Sonakshi are quite different in the film as well. My original character is a small town girl who is blunt and hasty and on the other hand Sonakshi is unruffled and composed. I was not jealous of Sonakshi as she comprehended the importance of both the characters and how essential it is that both take the film forward,” said Penty.

The model-turned-actress also said that she never intended to join Bollywood. “I am an accidental actor,” she added.

“While I was modeling in New York, I got a call from Dinesh Vijan and Homi Adajania for Cocktail, who said they wanted to launch a new girl. I didn’t even think of films at that time because I was very happy being a model, but when I did the film I realised that I love acting and enjoy being a part of it. I was suddenly exposed to it and I didn’t even know that I had the potential. It happened accidentally but I’m ecstatic that it did.”

Sinha, who has acted in both action as well as comic films, said, “Comedy is something that comes very easy to me since I am someone who finds humour in everything no matter what.” The actress would have been a fashion designer if she wasn’t in front of the camera.

“I have done a course in fashion designing and I was really good at it but I never got the chance to pursue that further because I became an actor. Maybe someday I would like to go back to that but as fashion is already a big part of what I do right now so I feel like I’m connected to it in every way,” she said.

“In the future,” she said,“I would love to do a sports biopic one day because growing up I was into various sports and I thoroughly enjoyed it. If I ever get a chance to play a sportsperson on screen it would be a sort of a homecoming because I really want to go back. In fact, Akira was not a biopic, but yes it was definitely something which involved a lot of physical training and the tough grind was almost equal to doing a sports biopic.”

After having a successful run with the first film, Aziz said that he is not ready to go beyond comedy yet. “I don’t think I have had my fill yet, I want to write a few more comedy hits before I take a step to move into a different genre.”

Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi also stars Jassi Gill, a singing sensation of Punjab, who has given music hits like, Bapu Zimidar, Guitar Sikhda, Laden, Nakhre and many more. The sequel is slated to hit the screens this Friday.
