Artist Arun Pandit will be showcasing his collection of sculptures titled Power & Pathos. It is inspired by the internet problem Error 404

Recently, he hit the headlines with his magnificent sculpture of a human Garuda that was created for Tirupathi Airport and unveiled by the Prime Minister. Artist Arun Pandit is all set to showcase his collection of sculptures at lalit Kala Akademi from next week. His solo show Power & Pathos is meant to celebrate the beauty and strength of the grainy texture of bronze.

Excerpts from the interaction:

Why did you name it Power & PathosIJ

The title Power & Pathos is the extension of my earlier show Error 404 where I portrayed the effect of internet on society through contemporary sculptures. The same idea has now taken shape in Power & Pathos and is more inclined towards the physical and emotional distance between us and our loved ones in the present society. The necessity to sustain and grow in this competitive world has pulled us away from our family and is a harsh truth that shakes us emotionally. We also have a sculpture on display named Trials which depicts the very emotion between a family and their child when they are separated for materialistic benefits.

How long did it take to finish the sculptures IJ

The prolonged process of defining the emotions into these sculptures began in 2012. Since then, every passing year has brought the virtual idea into shape.

Why is bronze the material of your choiceIJ

If we look into the sculptures from our ancient history, we will notice that even after getting exposed for several years they still are as mesmerising as before. Similarly to extend the shelf life of these art pieces, I chose this alloy. Bronze moulds well and gives a grainy texture which makes an art work a perfect blend of aesthetics and realism.

What is the inspiration behind the idea of Power & Pathos IJ

Being artistic and creative, I tend to perceive and grab inspiration from my surroundings. My parents, friends and everyone around me are the ones who inspire me. The visuals in my day to day life are what I try to portray through my creations rather presenting something else. Though I admire installations, I could never garner the courage to make them because of space constraints. But I have always been on the lookout for a medium that I can combine with sculptures to give them movement and life and stir the conscience of the onlooker.

All of your works is presented in the show or just the selected onesIJ Which one is your favorite IJ

No, The show will only present the selected pieces of sculptures. To mention a few, my personal favorites will be the error bull, couples, electronic age and trials. The reason why I am mentioning these particular artefacts is because these are the most close to the theme of the title Power & Pathos as they quite clearly depict and make the onlookers feel the condition of our present society.

What are the problems you faced during preparation of sculpturesIJ

There is nothing in this word that I think can be sorted out at ease. A bottle-neck situation is just a part of life and in fact it actually is the reason which gives the maximum pleasure after you over-come your struggle. So I don’t consider that there was any trouble during the process and also I am quite a determined person and that helps to make my way to achieve my goals.
