As the team of Ambarsariya visits The Pioneer office, actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh explains why Punjabi music videos are extravagant. In a chat, he also talks about his Bollywood career and the differences he finds in both the industries

He is the mind behind songs like Proper Patola, lak 28 kudi da and many more. Diljit Dosanjh, a name which will not only make you dance with his catchy numbers but can also make you laugh with his exceptional performance in films like Jat & Juliet. Now, as he makes his Bollywood debut with Udta Punjab, he talks about his growth as an actor and how he pens down lyrics of his songs

So, what is keeping you busy these daysIJ

Ambarsariya (laughs)

The rumour has it that you taught Punjabi to lauren for the movieIJ

I did not teach Punjabi to lauren Gottlieb, it was the director, Mandeep Kumar, who taught her. I don’t know who started this rumour. I also tweeting and clarifying the same.

Was there anything challenging that you found in the scriptIJ

One thing that I found challenging in the movie was the accent because it changes after every six hours in Punjab.

You are also making your Bollywood debut with Udta Punjab, so how was the experience working on the projectIJ

It was an amazing experience to work in Udta Punjab. Our director, Abhishek Chaubey — I have seen his movies. I wish I could do more movies with him. That movie has taught me a lot, and after that movie, when I saw my commercial hit Sardar Ji, I saw a complete change in my performance. That was a fantasy world but this is real cinema. I have learnt a lot from him.

What are the differences that you find between the Punjabi film industry and BollywoodIJ

I think experience. People in Bollywood have a lot of experience. Other than that, money is another issue.

Is that a drawback of the Punjabi industryIJ

I would not call it a drawback because when someone knows that they have to run their entire month in Rs1,000, they manage to do it. You cannot call that drawback, rather it a talent.

What do you think while writing lyrics like Proper Patola, Goliyan or lakh 28 kudi daIJ

It sounds really well. ‘P’ for proper and ‘P’ for Patola. In fact, I spent all my money that I had received for doing a show, on making that video. I had written it long time back and it was with me for two years. I wanted to shoot it in a nice way, and when I found everything that I wanted for the song, I just did it. I did not bring anything back home. The inspiration for the lyrics is all over. Sometimes, a thought crosses your mind and it just stays there. That is how most of my lyrics turn up.

We have seen how extravagant Punjabi videos are. What is the reason for thatIJ

Shauk hai bas. I have worked with Badshah, Yo Yo  Honey Singh and they all are working because they love their work. They will spend all their savings for a video because that’s what they believe in.
