After successfully launching their cafe chain in Defence colony, Social adds new section of delicacies to its earlier menu Riya Sharma checks in and finds out that ordinary dishes  like omlete and pao are given a refreshing touch while keeping the flavours of the typical dishes intact.

Whether you are a party animal or just someone who hits the social circuit only on Sundays, possibilities are rare that you haven’t been to Social. With people bombarding their selfies and check-ins of the popular and new hangout place for anyone looking for having a good time, we decided to treat ourselves by checking in at the Social in Defence colony.

Situated in the main market of Defence colony, we managed to find it which looked nowhere different from its successor in Hauz Khaz village. Once you enter the place, the first thing that you see is the place to get your alcohol. For a lot of people, that is actually their spot to de-stress themselves and get offline from the worries of the world. The thing that we found interesting was the way they have managed to hang bottles to the ceiling of the bar and that is actually one of the things different of the place.

The place is dark with walls that haven’t been painted which actually add rustic feeling to the whole setting. lanterns, comfortable leather sofas, yellow and orange chairs with the right pitch of the music would certainly light up your mood. Known for following out of the box ideas and adding cool quotient to their kitty, simple things such as water glasses are painted with ‘pani’ and ‘beer’ written in Hindi on it.

For those who don’t know, the place has added many new dishes its different food sections. . The first thing that we noticed was the all day breakfast which has all kinds of omelet- cheese, onion et al. But we decided to try Chinese bhel and strawberry iced tea and pink cream mocktail to start our evening.

Chinese bhel was nothing sort of bhel that we think of it as it to be. It came in a kind of container and presented to us by actually pouring the whole chaat on the plate for us. The bhel was actually fried noodles that were crisp, a bit spicy but a rush of flavours in our mouth. To add more to the flavour, they have added manchurian balls to the bhel which are actually really soft and taste exactly how  a masala lover would love to have. The strawberry iced tea as signature of Social came in a small bath tub which tasted average like any other berry iced tea. But, what we really liked was the pink cream. It came in a jar and had the blended mixture of pineapple juice, strawberries, mangoes and guava was quite opposite to what we had expected. There was nothing pink in it and it was more on the lines of how green mangoes would taste.

The next thing that we were tempted to try was the Kerala coin parantha which has the option of toppings of your choice. It can be either with as they say ‘laal maas’, ‘sukka chicken’ and ‘paneer’. We decided to go with paneer this time. What it turned to be what it literally meant. There were nine pieces of coin sized and shaped parantha with toppings of paneer, onion and tomatoes. The assortment of the three with a thin crust parantha layer and sprinkled lemon to go with was impressive and tasted like ‘paneer bhurji’ to us.

Another dish that we couldn’t resist trying was the minced chicken baida roti – a typical Mumbai street food which has skillet omelet with minced meat in it. “Baida in Mumbai is egg so we make the crust from egg and stuff it it with minced mutton or chicken, according to the need of the customer,” shared Hemant from social. As the menu doesn’t not only cater to the taste bud of masala lovers, the menu also has something in store for those who wish to have to Chinese or American. We were actually recommended to try laksa curry which had chunks of mushrooms, broccoli and a prominent flavour of coconut in it. The curry was thick made out of coconut which also had noodles added soaked completely in the curry.

As we thought that it was time for us to leave, the manager, Jay Gupta insisted on trying their dessert, Surest and Ramesh. Who hasn’t seen the famous five star ad by the duo-Suresh and Ramesh, and now they have a dessert from their name. The five star chocolate  was actually fried which was presented in box which reminded me of my school’s tiffin box. The chocolate was melted but the crust of five star looked nowhere near to the original chocolate. It was white and crisp but once you take a bite, it’s all over your face and mind you, on your fingers served perfectly with vanilla ice cream.

With their second outlet already a hit among delhiites, we asked the manager if they wish to continue the expansion. “We opened this outlet on April 1 and the response has been overwhelming. We certainly wish to expand but for now, we want to keep that under wraps,” he concluded the evening for us.
