As the historic run of DDlJ concludes at Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir, emotional fans thanked the theatre and producers wishing a re-release of the movie

While fans all over the country were still recovering from the hangover of 1,000 weeks of Dilwale Dulhaniya le Jayenge, an unexpected news broke a million hearts. Maratha Mandir, a theatre that made DDlJ an iconic movie in the history of Indian cinema by running it for record number of weeks, decided to screen its last show.

As the news broke, fans on social media thanked the producers and the theatre owners for running the movie for 1,009 long weeks.  “It may be the end of @DDlJ at Maratha Mandir. But the movie will stay in our hearts forever (sic),” Atharluvsrk posted on Twitter. Kasim Shaikh was lucky enough to watch a screening of DDlJ at Maratha Mandir. “Would have never left the theatre knowing it’s gonna end,” she lamented.

Amrita Tanna requested Yash Raj Films to release the movie all over again. “As the @DDlJ box office run comes to an end, hope @yrf considers re-releasing it in cinemas across the globe... including in the UK. #wish (sic),” she wrote.

According to a Yash Raj Films statement, “Post the 1,000 week celebrations last December, the theatre had requested YRF to prepone the DDlJ morning show to 9.15 am instead of 11.30 am as it was becoming difficult for the cinema to accommodate multiple new releases every week with just three regular shows.” The statement mentioned while the film was being screened at 9.15 am since February 13, the theatre faced issues regarding the working hours of the staff.

“While the theatre management was happy to continue the film for as long as it continued to draw in the audience, owing to logistical issues of their staff having to work inordinately long hours to accommodate an additional early morning show, it was mutually decided to end the films historic and record breaking run,” the statement said. “However, this endearing and endless romance will continue to live in our hearts forever…,” YRF concluded.
