Taylor Swift is playing the role of Rosemary in her forthcoming film The Giver. It is based on a novel by lois lowry and presents a society devoid of any conflict, racism or sickness

After Valentine’s Day, The Giver will mark your first full fledged role in a film. How excited are youIJ

When I read the book while at school, I remember that the book deeply affected me. While reading the script I pictured the characters played by these incredible actors, Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep, who have already signed onto the project. I was thrilled and honoured to play Rosemary.

How challenging was it to portray an unglamourous imageIJ

The irony was to play the role of an emotionless person and thus we decided to keep it simple. It was important to be grounded. We needed pleasing colours that didn’t jar or disturb the character’s calm existence, so we majorly worked with pastel colours at first and then introduced primary colours when the drama shifted and memories came forth. Diana Cilliers’ costume designs also depicted colours which helped to keep the character of Rosemary intact.

Do you think a community devoid of racism and sickness is a possibility in today’s timeIJ

I believe that the only religion we all must follow is humanity. Such a community is possible when every individual does their bit to spread harmony.

The role of Rosemary has various shades in the film. How did you prepare for itIJ

Rosemary is a beautiful character. As I was recollecting all the elements, it clicked me that emotions play a very important part in my life and that’s what exactly I bring to my songs. People wouldn’t have listened to my songs if they weren’t heart broken, deeply affected, hurt or jilted. Emotion is such an important part of everything in my world. I can’t imagine the world without emotions.

Forty three of your songs made it to Billboards’ hottest 100s. For an artiste like you, do such listings matterIJ

I am happy that people love me. It helps to keep a track it’s popularity among the youth.

You mentioned that you won’t resort to trendy gimmicks to promote your albums. But don’t you think such gimmicks help artistes fetch eyeballsIJ

The content of music should always be the USP. It should touch the hearts. Gimmicks do help to hit the maximum eyeballs, but at the end, the listeners remember the kind of music you made for them but not the gimmicks.

What is that you keep in mind while composing a songIJ

Emotions play a major role in my life, it is important that I get connected with my own compositions before sharing it with my listeners.

You seem to understand the pulse of young generation. Do you think your age has helped you connect better with themIJ

Yes, I understand and relate to the current youth age group. My compositions speak the teen’s mind.

Have you started shooting The Secret ServiceIJ What is your character in the filmIJ

The film is expected in theatres in November 2014. It’s a spy film, where I require some heavy-duty martial arts training so that my character convincingly kicks Samuel l Jackson’s b****.

Tell us something about your forthcoming films and albumsIJ

This year has been very eventful. I have lots to share in my kitty, waiting for the official announcement.
