Recognise the legacies of the past and prepare yourself for pay back to your alma mater and always acknowledge and recognise those who got you where you are,” said Arup Roy Choudhury, CMD, NTPC and chairman DVC, addressing young students at XXIV convocation ceremony held at BIT Mesra, Ranchi.

“Compete with yourself to ascend the ladder of self actualisation” and create your own destiny through hard work, grit and will power,” he added. Exhorting young budding professionals to prepare for challenges and conquering them, he said there is learning at every stage of life and all those planning a successful journey must prepare exceedingly well.

He thanked Syed Ahmed, governor of Jharkhand and chancellor and Manoj Kumar Mishra, VC, for giving him opportunity to interact with young graduates. Remembering the day when he first walked into the institute as young boy, he said coming back to one’s alma mater is one of the most satisfying and emotional experiences. He also shared his guruji’s dictum Sankalp Shuddh hi Siddha (if your intentions are pure, you are bound to succeed in life).

Becoming the youngest CEO of a Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) at the age of 44, Choudhury scripted a stunning turnaround story by transforming NBCC. The transformational turnaround of the company brought about by him enabled NBCC’s turnover grow about 10 times and net-worth over 500 times during his tenure of nine-and-a-half years at the helm. Choudhury heads NTPC limited, a maharatna, the largest power producer in the country and ranked number one independent power producer in the world by Platts Top Global Company Rankings-2013. With a total installed capacity of 43019 MW, NTPC contributes over 27 per cent of total electricity generated in India. Choudhury has also authored a book titled Management by Idiots.
