Sonu Nigam is back after a hiatus. He chats with K Bhardwaj on his new compositions and an international album

It was not long ago when Sonu Nigam had become one of the most sought-after voices in Bollywood. However, the promising singer of our times took what seemed like a long gap. Meanwhile, a lot of new voices set the tone for the new-age music. The multi-faceted singer, who is known for hit albums like Jaan,Yaad, Mausam, is back with a bang. “I am busy with the line up I have and I am doing different sounds now,” he says. “You will get to hear me in forthcoming movies like Warning, Besharam and Kaanchi. I am also busy with my project with Bickram Ghosh. Both of us are doing movies like Sooper Se Ooper and Jal. I have also composed the title track of Singh Saab The Great. I’m also composing for another movie but the details will be out soon,” he tells us.

While the singer was missing in the industry, a lot of new talent emerged on the music scene. “It is good to see new people, new sounds. Music scene is growing in India. We get to see so many cultures here in music,” he says adding, “Music is bound to change and I am glad that audience is always open to different kinds of music. Our composers, singers and writers are also very open to experimenting.”

Independent music (pop) was in vogue a decade ago. But today, pop albums exist marginally. But then, there are new platforms like YouTube for young musicians. Do you miss doing albumsIJ “I am working on my international album and I am waiting to release it, you will hear of it soon. It will be finished in couple of months,” he says.

His latest song is Taakiden from movie Warning (Sony Music). The film is produced by Anubhav Sinha’s production Benaras Media Works. “I was excited since the time I was introduced to it. This song has my signature style but needed a very different feel. I am glad that people are already liking it,” he says. Would you like to act againIJ “If at all I’m convinced with the project,” he replies.

Though Sonu has been facing tough times recently after he lost his mother, he says, “life is a roller coaster ride, and experiences stay with you forever. I am born for music and it will stay with me forever.”
