PM Modi’s Fierce Attack as Women’s Reservation Bill Falls
Published on:
In a sharply worded address to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a blistering attack on the Opposition following the defeat of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha. Describing the setback as a “foeticide of an honest endeavour,” he accused parties like the Indian National Congress, Samajwadi Party, and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam of betraying both the Constitution and the aspirations of women across the country.

The bill, crucial to operationalising the Women’s Reservation framework, failed to secure the required two-thirds majority, garnering 298 votes in favour and 230 against. The proposed amendment sought to expand the strength of the Lok Sabha from 543 to a potential 850 seats while ensuring 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies.

With the Constitution amendment defeated, the government chose not to table the two accompanying bills necessary for its implementation. Expressing regret over the outcome, Modi offered an apology to “all the mothers of the nation,” stating that the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment remains unwavering despite the legislative setback.
