Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi came together in a rare statuary meeting on Wednesday. The meeting was held by the selection committee for the Central Information Commissioner (CIC) and the Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC). The committee comprises the PM as chairperson, the LoP and a Cabinet Minister nominated by the PM.
Though the scheduled meeting was known and also a dissent anticipated, the corridors of Parliament were abuzz with rumors of a long “cordial” meeting between both the sides. The meeting between the three leaders, who are increasingly growing acrimonious in public, comes amidst the attack on former
PM Jawaharlal Nehru during recent debates in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on the 150th year of national song Vande Matram and electoral reforms.
Official sources confirmed that the senior Congress leader recorded his opposition in writing to the names proposed by the Government for these vital posts, which include eight Information Commissioners as well. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet will soon announce the appointment notifications for the said vacant positions.
While Rahul Gandhi’s point-by-point objections could not be ascertained, it is believed he has always expressed his annoyance over the procedure of selection for top vacancies, including that at Nirvanchan Sadan. However, this is not the first time Opposition’s representatives have dissented. Earlier, the Congress president, as the LoP who attended these meetings as Opposition representatives, raised objections. The Chief Information Commissioner’s post has been vacant since September 2025.
