Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metro Rail is set to get more coaches, most likely by 2029, as Metro officials have invited tenders for 60 coaches at an estimated cost of Rs 923.62 crore through the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

DMRC has invited international tenders for the design, manufacture, supply and commissioning of 60 coaches, with Delhi Metro International Limited (DMIL) involved in the implementation process.

The contract also includes training and maintenance of the trainsets and associated depot equipment for 15 years to support Hyderabad Metro operations.

Companies can submit bids until January 13, 2027, and the technical bids will be opened the following day. The successful bidder will be selected after evaluating the technical qualifications and financial proposals. The selected company will have to manufacture and supply the coaches within 125 weeks (approximately 2.5 years).

At present, Hyderabad Metro operates 57 trains, each consisting of three coaches, and carries around 5 lakh passengers daily. The 60 additional coaches could enable the operation of 10 six-coach trains, increasing the network's passenger-carrying capacity.

Hyderabad Metro trains are overcrowded daily, especially during morning and evening peak hours on the IT corridor and other busy routes. The additional coaches are expected to ease congestion, accommodate more passengers and improve travel comfort.

Earlier, in April this year, the Telangana government signed a share purchase agreement to acquire 100 per cent of the equity shares in L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited (LTMRHL) for an equity value of Rs 1,461.47 crore. The agreement is expected to enable Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) to proceed with Phase-II works. The Phase-II expansion covers 162.5 km across eight new corridors at an estimated cost of Rs 43,848 crore.

The procurement of new coaches by HMRL also assumes significance amid the ongoing management transfer process of Hyderabad Metro Phase-I and the approval process for Phase-II.
