Hyderabad: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar has congratulated the farmers in Tandur, Telangana, on the first-ever export of red gram to Australia.
In a post on social media platform X, the minister said, “A proud moment for Telangana as our GI-tagged Tandur red gram makes its first export journey to Australia, facilitated by APEDA under the Union Ministry of Commerce & Industry.”
The Karimnagar's MP also stated that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative is taking farmers’ produce to global markets.
Tandur red gram is the first agricultural product from Telangana to receive geographical indication (GI) registration.
“Telangana’s soil. Our farmers’ toil. Global recognition! Congratulations to our farmers and everyone who made this milestone possible,” Sanjay said in his post.
Earlier, on Wednesday (October 28), the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) announced that it had facilitated the first-ever export shipment of GI-tagged Tandur red gram from Telangana to Australia.
The export consignment was flagged off from Hyderabad to Australia in hybrid mode on October 28, 2026, APEDA said in a statement.
The consignment comprised 2.5 metric tonnes (MT) of GI-tagged Tandur red gram, exported by Hyderabad-based Durga Exports and Imports under the brand name AMMAAS, it added.
APEDA said the shipment marked an important milestone in promoting Telangana's distinctive agricultural produce in international markets.
The export shipment to Australia represents a significant step towards exploring new overseas markets for this distinctive agricultural product and expanding opportunities for farmers, producers and exporters, it said further.
