Would-be bride bears brunt

Now when Greater Noida's Bisara village in Dadri has grabbed headlines over lynching of 50-year-old Mohammad Ikhlaq by 200-strong mob on Monday night over rumours that the family had consumed beef or slaughtered a cow, carpenter Anwar, whose daughter is to get married on October 12, is having sleepless nights as the bridegroom's family has declined to visit the violence-hit village to solemnise the marriage.

Fearing for their lives, the bridegroom's family members who reside in Fareed Nagar of Ghaziabad are now playing safe and don't want to marry their son in a village where Muslims don't “feel safe”.

“My daughter's would-be husband called to inform me that he will not bring the baraat. They are too scared to come here. They will go ahead with the marriage only if I change the location,” said Anwar, who had decided to hold the reception in the open area near a temple.

“Earlier, things were normal. The boys of Rajput community would come and help in arrangements but this one incident has changed everything,” Anwar lamented.

But now as it is too late, Anwar has no other option left but to meet the bridegroom's family and convince them of changing their plan.

“I am going to meet them tomorrow. I can understand that looking at the changed environment outsiders would fear to visit the village. My problem is that I cannot afford to cancel the marriage as I have spend a huge amount of my money for this marriage from booking to buying clothes and other things,” added disturbed Anwar, whose one daughter is already married.
