With change of guard, BJP battle-ready

The day the Delhi BJP saw a change of guard, party’s top leadership indicated the likelihood of re-elections to the Delhi legislative Assembly. In a function where newly-elected Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay assumed charge of the office, BJP General Secretary (Organisation) Ram lal exhorted the leaders and workers to be prepared for the ‘forthcoming’ elections and repeat the magical performance of the recent lok Sabha polls. “Just as the BJP gave 100 per cent results, winning all the seven parliamentary seats in Delhi in the lS polls; it has to repeat the same in the Assembly elections too,” he said. He was speaking while felicitating Upadhyay on taking over as the party president. Upadhyay already said that he would discuss the issue of re-elections or Government formation with his party colleagues and MlAs and the same would be conveyed to the BJP’s Central leadership.

Meanwhile, immediately after taking charge of the office, Upadhyay pressed for a ‘reform’ within the party by doing away with the ‘stereotype’ and ‘conventional’ style of politics. Instead, he said, the thrust will be on issue-based, development-oriented politics. He also indicated a thorough change in the party organisation right from the block level to the top in the hierarchy. “There has to be a drastic change in the party — both in terms of organisation and style of functioning. Instead of stereotype dharna and protests, the party will have to focus on issues concerning people. Micro-detailing of

specific issues will help understand the problems better. The attitude of leaders within the party has to be changed and there must be wider scope for flexibility,” Upadhyay said, adding he would work as a ‘trustee’ of the party where each and every worker will be the party president.

Earlier, Union Health Minister and former Delhi BJP chief Dr Harsh Vardhan handed over the charge of Delhi unit to Upadhyay at its headquarters at 14 Pant Marg. Praising Upadhyay, Vardhan said the party was confident that the Delhi BJP would get a lot of success in the coming days under the leadership of Upadhyay. “Party has given an important role to Upadhyay and I am sure that he would do well,” he added.
