With odd-even on, the Supreme Court on Saturday failed to understand how Delhi's pollution continued to show worrying levels and told both Centre and Delhi government that they were not serious about making Delhi's air clean. With pollution not showing any improvement in the cirt
The Bench hearing a batch of petitions on curbing pollution in Delhi said, “Why no difference is made out in pollution level in Delhi even after steps have been taken like odd-even scheme. Earlier, trucks used to ply through the heart of the Capital but now we have diverted them but still no difference seems to have been made in improving the ambient air quality.” The remarks came as a big blow to the Arvind Kejriwal Government which lauded on its odd-even scheme as a huge success ever to be experimented globally to curb the severe problem of air pollution.
The Bench also comprising Justices AK Sikri and R Banumathi felt that courts are being forced to go into these kind of matters due to the Government’s failure to provide solutions. Senior advocate KK Venugopal who appeared for a set of toddlers seeking clean air to breathe as a fundamental right presented studies conducted abroad to show that possibilities are open for the Centre to retrofit older diesel engines to reduce emissions.
While ASG Maninder Singh volunteered to get response on the report, the bench said, “Why can’t you yourself do research instead of waiting for Venugopal and his team to come up with a report. It is a matter of life which is affecting the people."
