A Government schoolteacher was killed on Friday afternoon in outer Delhi's Kanjhawala when the scooter on which she was travelling with her husband went into a water-logged pothole and a speeding water tanker coming from behind ran over her.
According to senior police official, the woman fell off the scooter and a speeding water tanker coming from behind ran over her, leaving her dead on the spot. The driver of the tanker was arrested. The incident took place around 4pm, when the deceased, identified as Usha chauhan (49), who worked as a teacher at a Government school in Shahbad Dairy area, was going to a nearby place with her husband. As told by the deceased's husband, who was also injured in the accident, since it had rained recently, the road they had taken was water-logged.
"He said that their scooter all of a sudden felt a strong jerk as it hit a submerged pot hole and he lost balance. Witnesses and locals also told the police that the jerk was such that the woman fell off the scooter while the man was trying to hold it still. Meanwhile, a speeding water tanker approaching from behind crushed the woman as he could not see her due to the water logged street. As the on-lookers raised alarm, the driver of the tanker left the vehicle on the spot and fled taking advantage of the crowd," said a senior police officer.
Police was called and the woman was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead while her husband was given treatment. Her body was sent for a post mortem and the tanker was seized. "The police traced the owner of the vehicle and with his help the errant driver was also held. CCTV footages of the incident are also being checked to ascertain the sequence of incident. A case under IPC 304A for causing death due to negligence has been registered," the officer said.
