The Union Urban Development Ministry will announce on Monday India's cleanest cities on the basis of progress made in a list of 73 cities surveyed recently to evaluate the implementation of Swachchh Bharat Mission that aims to make the country open-defecation free by 2019.
The finding of the survey, aptly named Swachchh Survekshan will be announced by Union Minister for Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu.
The survey was conducted to assess the sanitation and hygiene conditions in 73 major cities, said a senior official from the Ministry.
The first of its kind survey since the launch of the Mission in October, 2014, aims to serve as a report on the work carried out by different municipal bodies under the mission.
The rankings would be an evaluation of progress made in the areas such as strategy for open defecation free town (ODF) and integrated solid waste management (SWM), information, education and behaviour change communication (IEBC) activity, sweeping, door to door collection and transportation (of solid waste), processing and disposal (of solid waste), provision of public and community toilet seats and construction of household individual toilets.
The survey findings would also rank the 73 cities based on the individual score achieved by each centre, to foster a spirit of competition among the major cities and to motivate the cities to work towards improving the cleanliness level of their respective centres, said the official.
The report would also help the Centre to mentor and guide different cities, by evaluating the best practices observed by top performing centres, he added.
