T's Siddipet hits 100% toilet at home target

Siddipet in Medak district has become the first Assembly constituency in Telangana to become “open-defecation free”. The rare distinction was bestowed on the predominantly rural constituency on Gandhi Jayanti with each of the 64,733 households getting the toilets.

State Minister for Irrigation T Harish Rao, who represents the constituency, said that the achievement could become possible due to the cooperation and participation of the people in the drive to end the open defecation. The administration was fully involved in achieving the target for the past one month and the toilets with a pit were built for all the households.

“This will make life easy specially for the women who were forced to go into the open fields for attending nature’s call at a great risk”, Harish Rao said. “It was creating a lot of problems including the health issues for the women but now with a toilet at home, these problems are solved”, he added.

Apart form Siddipet Municipality, the constituency has three rural mandals or blocks.

“The achievement will go a long way in ensuring clean environment and put an end to pollution”, he said.

“Siddipet is now a shining example not only for Telangana but for the entire country”, said Telangana Assembly Speaker Madhusudhana Chary, who inaugurated the celebrations marking the achievement.
