Torture? NDMC officer kills self

Published on:

Pressurised by seniors, a 57-year-old NDMC sanitary inspector committed suicide by consuming poison at his office in South Delhi Sarojini Nagar on Friday. Police said a suicide note was found in his possession, which stated that he was depressed as he was pressurised by his seniors who made him work four shifts every day. But the suicide note did not have his signature or the name of any person.

The deceased, identified as Harpal, wrote a suicide letter on Friday afternoon and reached his office around 2 pm in his Santro Car and consumed poison at his office. He then drove to the nearby Primus Hospital in Chanakyapuri on his own and collapsed. Doctors tried to resuscitate him but later declared him dead.

Harpal's family alleged that his office seniors would always pressurise him and even make him clean dirt from the railway tracks. According to Harpal's co-workers, Harpal was a mild mannered person and would never indulge in any sort of arguments ever. Harpal is survived by his son and wife. Days before taking the extreme step, Harpal used to tell his son that he was very depressed and pressurised because of his work and that he wanted to resign.

"Harpal's body was sent for post-mortem and Inquest proceedings under Section 174 CRPC has been initiated. Further investigations are underway. We are also investigating the allegations of Harpal in his suicide note from all angles. Viscera and gastric lovage of the deceased has been preserved" said the senior police official.
